History of Kedarnath Temple
As the legend goes, Pandavas, the five famous characters of Mahabharata, the greatest epic, are said to have sought Lord Shiva’s redemption after winning the battle of Kurukshetra. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva evaded him in the Himalayas by disguising himself as a buffalo. The Pandavas could only manage a glimpse of Lord Shiva in a few holy places in the Himalayas and Kedarnath Dham is one of those places. Kedarnath Temple is the place where the hump of the buffalo was seen.
Some Interesting Things You Need to Know About Kedarnath Temple
- Kedarnath Temple is a part of the Panch Kedar Circuit, which consists of other four temples, Madhmaheshwar, Tungnath, Rudranath and Kalpnath.
- Kedarnath Dham is also an important part of the Chardham Yatra, which includes three more temples, Gangotri, Yamunotri and Badrinath.
- The opening of Kedarnath Temple is announced on the day of Mahashivratri as well as the closing date is declared on the day of Vijayadashami.
- Tentatively, Kedarnath Temple’s gate opens on the day of Akshaya Tritiya and closes after the festival of Bhai Dooj.
- Kedarnath Temple is located in the Garhwal Himalayas. It remains open till autumn and in winter, due to heavy snowfall, the road gets closed. The idol of Kedarnath Temple is carried down to Ukhimath, in the lower terrains of the Himalayas.
