Dividing the Uttara Kannada and Shimoga by only a thin line, the highest waterfall of the state, Jog falls, plunges relentlessly, in continuous streams, from a height of 253 m (850 ft), in a single fall. A major tourist attraction in Karnataka, Jog falls, otherwise known as Gerusoppa Falls, is second only to Nohkalikai Falls of Meghalaya. Due to the construction of linganamakki dam, the flow is hugely restricted before the rainy season ushers in. The force of these waters is used for generating electricity and this explains the very thin streams before monsoons.
The second-highest plunge waterfall in India, Jog Waterfalls, derives its name from Joga, which in Kannada means falls. Essentially a creation of the Sharavathi river, the Jog offshoots into 4 segments, the Raja, Rocket, Roarer, and Rani. Dense green around the area, which enhances the visual appeal of the Jog.
Get ready for a shower of vaporous sprays that provide moments of absolute bliss as you walk down to the base of the waterfall. Summers could be scorching hot here, and monsoons are your only option for a visit. Winters can also be suitable as they are very conducive for outdoor activities.
Being a seasonal waterfall, Jog falls can be experienced at its best only in monsoons. You can visit between 9.30 AM to 4 PM. On one side, it has around 1400 steps. The travel guides will be able to show you three viewpoints, from which you can savor the breathtaking views of Jog falls. Valley, Clouds, Jog falls, rain and mist together make an awesome package of beauty and bliss. Misty clouds carried to and forth by the wind gushing forth, that occasionally scrape past your face, is another world of magical experience.
Must visit Jog Falls during your trip to Karnataka.
