The hillock in the serene banks of River Brahmaputra is a witness to the legendary romance of Asura King Bana’s daughter Princess Usha and Aniruddha, the grandson of Lord Krishna.  She was kept on this hillock surrounded by fire, which is the reason this place is known as Agnigarh. Built on a top of a hillock in Golaghat District, it is an outstanding landmark built by Kachari rulers in 8th -9th century AD. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The most interesting myth about this temple is that it was built with the stones found on the banks of river Dihing but natural calamities destroyed it. Its remains are still found in a forest of Gjapenemara. In the year 1687 the temple was reconstructed by Ahom King – Rajeswar Singha.  The temple was again destroyed and a devotee found the ruins of the temple under river Dihing. Later it was again reconstructed by Rajeswar Singha. This temple is surrounded by 4 other temples of Vishnu, Durga, Ganesh and Surya.
