About Panch Kedar Yatra

Panch Kedar Yatra or Panch Kedar Trek is one of the most sacred pilgrimages Yatras in India. It is a part of the holy Panch Kedar circuit. The names of the Panch Kedar Temples are Kedarnath Temple, Tungnath Temple, Rudranath Temple Madhmaheshwar Temple and Kalpeshwar Temple.

The word ‘Panch’ in Panch Kedar Yatra that translates to Five, suggest a spiritual expedition to five sacred shrines/temples of Kedarnath Dham, which are all dedicated to Lord Shiva. All the five abodes are tucked at really high elevations in pecking order of Garhwal region of Uttarakhand state. The sequential order of Panch Kedar Yatra starts from the Kedarnath Temple itself and further proceeds to other sacred settings:

  • Kedarnath Temple being the main shrine, perched at an altitude of 3,583 metres.
  • Tungnath Temple, elevated at 3,680 metres.
  • Rudranath Temple, altitude of which is 3,559 metres.
  • Madhyamaheshwar Temple, at an altitude of 3,490 metres.
  • Kalpeshwar Temple, at an elevation of 2,200 metres.

These five holy settings are highly significant to Hinduism and it is believed that each temple enshrines a different body part of Lord Shiva. The Panch Kedar Yatra is believed to be a complexed journey, but pilgrims especially the devotees of Lord Shiva set out on this divine expedition in want of spiritual fulfilment and attainment of salvation. Elements like devotional awakenings, sacredness, tranquillity and a want of being in the lap of mountains surrounded by the beautiful wildlife vistas, all can be attained via setting out to Panch Kedar Yatra.

It is said that Lord Shiva’s bull incarceration is worshiped in these temples. His body fell into different places when he was hiding from Pandavas when they were searching for him to atone for their sins of killing their own relatives in the war of Mahabharata. In Madhmaheshwar temple the stomach of Lord Shiva is worshipped. In Kedarnath the hump of the bull form of Lord Shiva fell. In Rudranath the face of Lord Shiva is worshipped, In Tungnath his arms fell and in Kapleshwar the matted hair of Lord Shiva is worshipped. Every year thousands of pilgrims undertake Panch Kedar Yatra to get the divine blessings of Lord Shiva.
